In 2007, the provincial government released the new Energy Plan which highlighted such things as:
Target reducing BC GHG emissions 33% by 2020
All electricity generation: zero net emissions by 2016
$25 million Clean Energy Fund (RoR included)
Provincial self-sufficiency by 2016
90% of BC Energy from clean renewable resources
Independent Power Producers
Currently, 34 IPPs provide approximately 7,000 GWh of electricity to BC Hydro's system. A further 27 IPPs were awarded contracts with BC Hydro in 2003. In 2006, BC Hydro awarded 34 contracts to IPPs in the largest Call for Power to date. These 34 contracts amount to over 7,000 GWh of electricity.
BC Hydro Stats
BC Hydro serves more than 1.6 million customers in an area containing over 94% of BC's population. Residential customers account for approximately 32% of energy demand, approximately 28% of demand is from commercial or light industrial customers and large industrial customers account for 38% of the energy demand.
In Fiscal 2004, electricity imports amounted to about 5500 GWh or approxiamtely 10% of load demand in B.C.
In Fiscal 2005, about 13%, or about 7000 Gwh, of provincial demand was met by imports from the United States and Alberta. Interestingly, much of the imported electricity from Alberta and the U.S. is produced using fossil fuels such as gas and coal.
